White Dandelions

Spring has sprung and with it, dandelion season is here. So? In the spirit of Double Negative Publishing, why not embrace it? Make it your own, something a bit more unique?

From time to time, writers of all stripes need something other than writing to focus on. In the Spring, one of my things is gardening.

It started with veggies but yeah, of course I like flowers now too. Especially when they’re a twist on something we’re all used to seeing (unless you live in southern Japan).

It’s not an aggressive variety and it actually took me 3 years to cultivate in a half barrel planter. They’re starting to seed now. No, I’m not expecting them to invasively spread around my neighbor’s back yard.

But hey, here they are, the white stag of the dandelion family. I’d gotten used to seeing the leaves but never the blooms. A part of me had given up on them. So, this month, working hard to prep my gardens, exhausted and moving slow … I finally spotted them.

The encounter revived my tired limbs and reminded me of what I love so much about growing my garden. The ability these discoveries have to delight can’t be underestimated.

Is there something you’ve seen a billion times? Something that just becomes a blur, lost in the small, otherwise trivial aspects of the day-to-day world? Maybe, nurture a way to see it differently … it might take a bit but … adding value to that couldn’t be a BAD thing … in the context of most flowers, I mean.
